Fishing Vermilion Bay

Calcasieu Lake, Cameron and Vermilion Bay: big marsh lakes and passes with easy roadside access.

What's biting now (Fall): One of the best seasons: speckled trout move into the marsh and lakes, and redfish school up along shorelines.

Commonly caught in this area: Speckled trout, redfish, flounder and black drum.

Also caught here: croaker, hardhead catfish, sheepshead, jack crevalle.

Shallow flats fish best on a rising tide that pushes fish up to feed. Move slowly, wear polarized glasses and look for tailing fish or nervous water. Cast ahead of fish, not on top of them.

How the bite outlook works

The rating is our estimate, not a guarantee. It combines tide range, wind, rain and storms, temperature swings, the moon phase and how well the solunar periods line up with dawn and dusk. Fish do not read forecasts - local knowledge always wins. Read more
